Dear friends and family,

We are very excited to announce that finally we are going to tie the knot in Klosters, Switzerland on the weekend of 6th - 8th March 2015!

There will be a get-together party on the evening of Friday 6th for those who can make it. On Saturday, the church ceremony will take place followed by a drink reception. The formal evening dinner and celebration will kick off on top of Madrisa Mountain at sunset with a stunning view into the valley of Klosters – we will then party until sunrise!

Given that Klosters is quite a small village, we suggest to book your hotel as soon as you can. Visit where to stay. You will also find lots of other useful information on this website – make sure you visit it regularly as we update it.

In the meantime, any questions, please contact us!

program

FRIDAY NIGHT FONDUE & SLEDGING AT BERGHAUS ALPENRÖSLI

Address: Berghaus Alpenrösli Klosters, Talstrasse 135, 7250 Klosters

Dress code: Smart casual / Alpine chic 🙂

Time: Taxis will pick you up from the respective lobbies of Hotel Wynegg, Hotel Vereina, Hotel Alpina and Hotel Sunstar at 7:00PM. Should you stay at a different hotel, please make your way to the nearest hotel listed above. Please make sure you arrive on time if you would like to take the taxi service.
A delicious Swiss Cheese Fondue will be served at around 7:30pm. Don’t worry; there will be an alternative for the not so cheesy ones. Just let us know in advance.
If you are a latecomer or wish to order your own taxi, please call Gotschna Taxi on +41 76 377 77 66

→ Important to know: Local licensed taxis are the only way of transportation to get you up to Berghaus Alpenrösli. Self-drive or hotel buses are not allowed due to the often difficult road conditions

Tips:

  • For those who want to sledge downhill after dinner, remember to bring some winter gear to enjoy a fun ride down the mountain! A warm jacket, (ski pants), gloves, a winter hat, warm socks and some sturdy boots (ideally above the ankle) will be very useful. The run takes about 15 minutes and ends close to Hotel Walserhof in downtown Klosters
  • Any non-sledgers will be taken down by taxis at ca. 10:00PM
  • We were warned that it’s going to be quite warm inside the restaurant once all the Fondue pots are fired up – so please consider layering yourself with clothes suitable for different temperatures 🙂

SATURDAY CHURCH CEREMONY & LIGHT RECEPTION AFTERWARDS

Address: Evangelische Kirche St. Jakob, Kirchgasse 9 (Kirchplatz), 7250 Klosters

Dress code: Formal attire

Time: Please arrive by 10:45AM. The church ceremony starts at 11:00AM and will be followed by a light reception with drinks & canapés at Hotel Vereina from 12:00 to 1:30PM

→ It’s a 5 minute walk from the church to Hotel Vereina

Tips:

  • The church of St. Jakob is the town’s historic church with a natural stone facade. There is a church square with a little fountain in front. It is not to be confused with the white modern catholic church just a few minutes down the road
  • Most of our recommended hotels in Klosters are within 5 minutes walking from St. Jakob church. Alternatively, your hotel will be happy to drop you off outside the church
  • Streets in Klosters are mostly sloped and winter boots are recommended for walking. There will be space inside the church for guests to change shoes if they wish to do so

SATURDAY EVENING DINNER & PARTY

Address: Bergrestaurant Madrisahof, Madrisa Mountain

Dress code: Black tie / winter glamour

Time: Hotel buses will be available at Hotel Wynegg, Hotel Vereina, Hotel Alpina and Hotel Sunstar at 5:45PM (first departure slot) and 6:00PM (second departure slot) to take you to the Madrisa Moutain cable car station. From there you will enjoy a 10-minute cable car ride up the mountain

  • If you are driving to the cable car station yourself, please make sure you arrive between 6:00PM and 6:30PM; there will be plenty of car park space available
  • Aperitif starts at 6:45PM followed by dinner at 8:00PM
  • Party until 3:00AM
  • First carriage: 12:30AM
  • Second & last carriage: 3:30AM

→ Important to know: The cable car is the only way up to the restaurant (unless you want to climb :)), so please make sure you arrive promptly at the hotel lobby / cable car station

Tips:

  • The cable car is not heated and after you get off, there will be a 5 to 10-minute walk uphill through the snow to the restaurant. So please wear non-slippery winter boots (!) and wrap up warm
  • For the elderly / people less able to walk through the snow, we have organized a covered snowmobile to take people to the restaurant (only 10 people at a time)
  • Guests will arrive at the restaurant in batches and we have reserved a number of rooms / storage space at the venue for people to change their shoes / outfit
  • Late at night, there will be two slots to take the cable car down: at 12:30AM for the early birds or 3:30AM for the real party people. Taxi transfer from the cable car station to the hotels will be organised

SUNDAY MORNING FAREWELL (OPTIONAL)

Address: Hotel Vereina, Landstrasse 179, 7250 Klosters

Time: From 11:00AM to 12:00PM or so

The morning after, you’ll find us at the “Winter Garden” of Hotel Vereina. If you feel like it, come over for a tea or coffee or just stop by to say goodbye before you set off. Optional only! No stress. We’ll be there from 11:00AM until noon ... or a little later

how to get there

FROM ZURICH AIRPORT TO KLOSTERS

By Train

Probably the best option and relatively stress-free. Buy a return ticket to “Klosters Platz” at the Zurich airport train station or book online in advance at www.sbb.ch. Tickets are valid at any time during the day. The journey time is ca. 2hrs 15mins one way and you will have to change once at Zurich central station and another time at Landquart. Changing is pretty hassle-free and connections are frequent: literally every 30 to 60mins with the last train departing Zurich airport at ca. 21:00. Most of our recommended hotels are walking distance from the Klosters train station. There is also a taxi rank. The cable car up to the ski resort is literally next to the train station.

By Car

The alternative to train is car rental. Most international car rental companies are represented at Zurich airport. Klosters is a 150km drive from Zurich Airport and it takes ca. 2hrs in normal traffic. See below for driving directions. When deciding for car rental, just keep in mind that there can be quite some traffic during high season and that hotels often charge for parking. You probably won’t use the car that much given everything in Klosters is within walking distance. For Saturday we’ll organise hotel transfers to the church ceremony and to the evening celebrations.

By Private Transfer

The ultimate luxury is obviously a private transfer, but such thing comes at a price … 😉 … may be more sensible for groups. This link lists a few companies operating at Zurich airport.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO KLOSTERS

Take the motorway in the direction of Chur and then take the Landquart exit heading for Davos. From Landquart continue on canton road 28 to Davos Klosters. Note that you will need a motorway vignette (CHF 40.00) for motorways in Switzerland. This is available at all border controls, petrol stations and post offices. Even in March there can be heavy snowfalls and this may make snow chains essential (unless arriving by all-wheel vehicle). But to be fair, we have never had to put on snow chains to get to Klosters.

where to stay

Due to limited hotel capacity in Klosters during the high season, we have secured a number of hotels at favourable rates for the two nights 6th & 7th March 2015. We encourage everyone to book their hotels ASAP to take advantage of these special rates.

In addition to our shortlist below, check out the usual travel booking websites for further hotel and B&B options. For those who want the ultimate luxury or sleep in the same room where Prince Charles usually stays try Chesa Grischuna Hotel or the Walserhof.

→ When booking the hotels below, please quote “Yi and Julius Kirchner Wedding”.

ACTIVITIES

See below for our “Top 5 Tips”. For even more inspiration visit the excellent website of the regional tourist office that covers everything you need to know – available in German, English and even Chinese (!).

Julius & Ada’s Top 5 Activity Tips

  1. Ski Ski Ski! Davos/Klosters is one of the top Swiss ski & snowboard destinations. It links five mountains and offers around 320km of pistes. Based in Klosters you take the Gotschna cable car (next to the train station) up to the Parsenn ski area, which also links to Davos. Alternatively you can take the local ski bus to the Madrisa cable car in Klosters Dorf (Klosters village), which takes you up to the smaller Madrisa resort. There is one ski pass for all resorts. For piste plans, tariffs, ski rental, ski schools, etc. please see this link.

  2. Incredible sledging: Mega fun! Apparently there are some 9 sledging opportunities in the Davos Klosters region. The closest to Klosters Platz literally ends opposite the Gotschna cable car station. Take the cable car up to the middle station called “Gotschnaboden”, where the 3.5 km run into Klosters kicks off. It is possible to hire sledges at the middle station for CHF 10.00 per sledge. Knee-length boots are advisable if you want to avoid snow getting into your shoes. More on sledging under this link.

  3. Go for a romantic winter walk or horse carriage ride: Our recommended walk leads you into the snow covered “Garfiun” valley. It’s easy going, takes 45mins one-way and starts at the “Monbiel car park” just outside Klosters. Get there by car, taxi or take Bus 2 (10mins) from the Klosters Platz train station to “Monbiel”, the final bus stop. At the end of the Garfiun valley, you can reward yourself with a traditional meal at the mountain hut “Alphütte Garfiun” (+41 81 422 13 69). For the lazy ones …. Book a very romantic horse carriage! Call Johannes Marugg (+41 79 611 42 87), Jogg Helstab (+41 79 798 01 37) or Christian Flütsch (+41 79 405 90 29). Prices range between CHF 25 to 50 per person for the return journey subject to how many of you are going. Pick-up for the tour is at the Klosters train station. You will travel to “Alphütte Garfiun”, rest there for one hour and return to the train station (makes it a 3-hour trip in total). Advanced booking is highly recommended.

  4. Short trip to Davos: Take the train or car to Davos. Visit the “Kirchner Museum” dedicated to the renowned expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who lived in Davos from 1918 until his death. Close to the museum you’ll also find a cable car taking you up to the Art Nouveau style mountain hotel “Schatzalp”, a former sanitorium that inspired Thomas Mann to write his famous novel “Zauberberg” (or “The Magic Mountain”). Find more inspiration on culture & art under the link here.

  5. Dive into Tamina Therme: Drive to Bad Ragaz (35mins from Klosters) for a truly luxurious spa and unwind experience in one of the world’s best spa & wellbeing centres. Check out their website. Plan four hours for the return trip.
